Labor & Industry Museum - Belleville, Illinois History

George C. Bunsen (1822-1908), son of famous German-Bellevillian educator and socialist George Bunsen, was a lifelong supporter of the workingman. In 1878, he edited "The Reform", a newspaper dedicated to upgrading the lives of industrial workers.

Hans Schwarz (1851-1934) a newspaper editor trained in Germany. In 1884, he established the "Arbeiter Zeitung", a German language daily paper. His labor reform ideas were of great interest to recent German immigrants. In 1892, he was elected President of Typographical Union #18. In 1907, he served as Secretary of the Illinois Association of the German-American Press.
