Labor & Industry Museum - Belleville, Illinois History

123 N. Church St., built by Conrad Bornman in 1837, is best known as a cigar manufactory. The commercial portion of the building fronting Church Street was built by tobacconist Charles Beck when he moved his shop from 208-120 West Main St. Beck was vice-president of the Cigar Makers Union, and served as the first Treasurer of the Trades & Labor Assembly in 1891.

The cigar rolling display is a permanent display in the museum. The tools were owned by Herman Stuempler, a cigar maker for 50 years both at Magin and Beck Cigar. His wages in 1945 were $15 a week. Stuempler could roll 800-1,000 cigars per day.

Donated by Cordell and Margaret Reisenberger.
